FRECA | Preview: Special Liveries for Monaco

In the first weekend of 2021 in which there will be two European F3 races in the same weekend, Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine meets Formula 1 again for one last time, as they are racing in support of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Earlier this week Formula 1’s McLaren Racing Partner, Gulf Oil, announced that this weekend McLaren would have surprisingly “worn” the historic Gulf livery this weekend. But it will not be just them wearing the livery which won Ford three Le Mans 24H between 1968 and 1975. In fact, in FRECA there are two drivers from MP Motorsport sponsored by ROFGO Gulf Heritage Collection, an exclusive car collection in the Gulf colours. These drivers are Franco Colapinto (ARG) and Oliver Gøthe (DEN) and for this reason they will also bring the Gulf colours out on track. sebmotors.info have also made a little tweak to their profile phot on Instagram in order to pay tribute to this wonderful livery!

Practice's TikTok Recap

Free Practice saw R-ace’s Hadrien David (FRA) on top, followed by Arden’s Alex Quinn (GBR) and the restless rookie, ART’s Gabriele Minì (ITA). Behind them, there was a big reshuffle of what we saw in the first two races as many drivers improved significantly: FA’s Andrea Rosso (ITA) was one of them, getting into the top 5, then MP’s Kas Haverkort (NED) in P9, who had so much bad luck in the first two weekends, Van Amersfoort’s Lorenzo Fluxá (SPA) in P11 and DR’s Brad Benavides (USA) in P13.

It was not the best start for the championship leader - ART’s Grégoire Saucy (CHE) - and the Ferrari junior, Prema’s Dino Beganovic (SWE), which both crashed at Portier (turn 8) in two different moments of the session. First to do so was Saucy, who was trying to avoid KIC’s Nico Göhler (GER) who had spun there. Afterwards, Beganovic just went straight in that same corner.

Here there are some words from the drivers: “I am happy about this result and hope tomorrow it will end up the same way.” says David “I am confident with the car on this track, where I had never even tested before. Probably my experience on the French street circuit of Pau, with the F4, where I have also won, has helped me today to find fast the right feeling.”

Then, Quinn:” I found the right pace quite fast not knowing the track, and I think this one of my strong points, being able to adapt quickly to a circuit without doing much testing prior to a race. I did not really push to the limit, considering the high risks of damaging the car being constantly a few cm from the wall”.

The fastest rookie and Under-17 driver on track, Minì: ”Happy with the speed and for not having made any mistake, but the track is tricky, especially in these conditions. The front understeers, but especially the rear in some curves suddenly slides as if it was on soapy water. Not easy to catch up half a second, but we will see.”

That is what Van Amersfoort’s Mari Boya (SPA) said more in general about the Monaco weekend: “We are looking forward to this round. Racing in Monaco alongside Formula 1 is something fantastic and I hope I will live up to the challenge. This will be one of the most special meeting of the season, but also one of the most difficult. Doing good in qualifying sessions and avoiding mistakes will be the key, but I am confident we can do a good job alongside the team to obtain better results”.
