Euroformula Open | Preview: Hungarian Dance With Bölükbaşı Joining
Updated: Jul 9
UPDATE from July 9th: Drivex's Enzo Trulli seems not to have enough money to race at Budapest and will therefore be replaced by the Italian F4's driver Joshua Duerksen (PY).
The Euroformula Open is back for its fourth meeting at the Hungaroring, located in Mogyoród, very close to Budapest. In the weekend of Keszthelyi’s home race, everything does look pretty exctiting indeed with both Crawford & Villagómez back and the e-sports champion Bölükbaşı entering the series.

Three weeks ago Cryptotower’s Louis Foster (UK) had left his own mark on Spa-Francorchamps - as you can also see with the amount of points he gained here - now Euroformula Open looks to be back for more action in the stunning Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Stunning but hot: 37°C (99°F) are forecast while Testing action will be going on Thursday, with some rain refreshing the air for Saturday.

The big news for the weekend is that the Turkish Cem Bölükbaşı is entering the championship with Van Amersfoort. Bölükbaşı is already known to the public for being a consistent race winner in the F1 Esports championship with Scuderia Toro Rosso (now turned AlphaTauri). He progressed in his esports career by winning the Formula Renault Esports championship title and then moved to proper racing with European GT4 and Formula Renault Eurocup. In 2021 he found himself in both the European Le Mans Series and in Asian F3. This winter in Asian F3 almost the whole field which he raced against was made of drivers who race in the 3 championships treated in this blog: from Euroformula Open his teammate Casper Stevenson (UK) and Double R’s Zdenek Chovanec (POR). The Turkish man faired really well, being always in the top 10 and once in the top 5.

This is what he affirmed about his Euroformula Open debut: “Besides virtually, the Hungaroring is unknown territory to me. I have spent a lot of time preparing in the simulator at Van Amersfoort Racing and even though realistic, I can’t wait to hit the track next weekend! I have spent non-stop time at VAR to prepare for Hungary. I’m learning and using the team’s knowledge in every way I can and I feel they’re as excited as I am to get going!”

Meanwhile, Motopark’s Keszthelyi Vivien is enjoying her home race this weekend: “I can’t wait to think about the fact that we will be racing at Hungaroring. Honestly I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I mean I’ve been there a few years ago already, it feels like 10 years, so I can’t wait to be there in Hungaroring. Obviously we are improving race weekend by race weekend, so basically I just really can’t wait to have even better results, especially in my home town and make Hungarian people proud.”

Her teammate Jak Crawford (USA) and Bölükbaşı’s teammate Rafael Villagómez (MEX) are now back after both having raced twice in FIA Formula 3 in the meantime: once at Le Castellet, France – clashing with Euroformula Open at Spa – and last week at Spielberg, Austria. The next FIA F3 event in the list it will actually be in Budapest at the end of the month, with Crawford saying that he luckily has the chance to learn this weekend in preparation for F3: “Running the Euroformula Open race is definitely going to help, because I’ve never been to Budapest. It’s definitely a new track for me. I get a test day this week on Thursday before the real weekend starts, so that track time should be good for learning the track. Also, I’ve done quite well on the simulator there, so hopefully I will be able to put it on the track as well.”
