British F3 | O'Sullivan the youngest ever BRDC SuperStar

Gloucestershire’s Zak O'Sullivan joins the BRDC SuperStars programme. A British racing programme which focuses on young British drivers across all classes of racing. Here are all the details on what that is about.

Introduction - In 2021 Zak O'Sullivan will have his first chance in Formula 3 as a rookie driver for Carlin in British F3, but this year won't be just about that for him. His addition to the BRDC SuperStars Programme at just 16 years of age means that he is the youngest driver to be ever reaching that. Now, looking at all those things in the right order...

Zak O'Sullivan - The teenage born in Withington, Gloucestershire gets to British F3 by having a great slipstream from last year: it was just his second year in racing cars after having raced in the Ginetta Junior Championship and the impression he made was - indeed - great. He won his first race at Donington and claimed pole position and two wins in the following event at Brands Hatch. He ended being the best rookie, having 9 wins, 18 podiums, 3 pole positions and 6 fastest laps in his tally and finishing just 4 points behind the drivers' champion.

His Words - This is what the driver himself has stated after the news: It’s a genuine honour to be selected for the BRDC SuperStars programme after only two years of car racing. I’m really grateful to Andy (Meyrick, BRDC Superstars director - ed.) and the team at the BRDC for showing faith in me – I’ll be doing all I can to repay that across the season. I’m really looking forward to stepping up to British F3 this year and knowing I have the BRDC’s support as I do that is really special.

The BRDC - The British Racing Drivers' Club is a member club for racecar drivers who promote many racing activities in the United Kingdom and also are the owner the Silverstone Circuit. Their President is the former F1 driver David Coulthard. They also manage many activities of support and development of young British racing drivers, with their involvement in the "McLaren Autosport BRDC Award" and the "Stars of Tomorrow" karting championship.

The SuperStars Programme - This programme in particular was created by the Formula One World Champion Damon Hill and its focus is on the development of the best young British drivers among the various classes of racing. Zak does this following in the footsteps of the Ferrari test-driver Callum Ilott and many other good drivers before him. And as said previously, he is the youngest one to ever get in the programme. Zak will take advantage of a tailored programme of advice and development to suit his requirements and hopes that his inclusion as a BRDC SuperStar will give him everything he needs to qualify for a full membership of the BRDC in the future.

Andy Meyrick's Words - This is what the BRDC Superstars director wrote to O'Sullivan: “You have demonstrated the skills and capabilities of someone who has the key ingredients to be a future top-level professional racing driver.”
